Sanctuary Policies

What Are Sanctuary Policies?

Sanctuary policies limit how much local law enforcement cooperates with federal immigration authorities. In sanctuary jurisdictions, local police may not honor ICE detainer requests, may not ask about immigration status, and may not allow ICE into local jails to interview detainees.

Sanctuary policies vary widely. Some are strong (full non-cooperation), others are limited. Check your specific city and state.

The Immigrant Legal Resource Center maintains a map of sanctuary jurisdictions. Search for your city or county to know your local protections.
